Placemats are fun to make because they are small and easy to handle. Test a quilt or applique pattern without investing a lot in time and materials. Make one to dress up an area of a room, or an entire set for your dinner table. They look very pretty on an end table, under a bouquet of flowers.

Another nice thing about placemats is that they accomodate any skill level. The starburst mat is definitely not for beginners, but the pumpkin mat can be made alone (without applique). It doesn't have to look "plain". Gorgeous fabric can make a beautiful placemat.
