Project: Day's End

Day's End: acrylic

Artist: Christina Sherrod

Sunset Oregon Coast acrylic painting lesson After painting "Watching The Storm" (June 2016), I decided to paint a colorful coastal scene. It is inspired by sunsets on the Oregon coast.

Painting in progress: Day's End

I always start with a few pencil lines, so I know just where to lay down my various layers of paint. The first photo was taken just after one quick wash of pink. I also splashed in a bit of yellow. This is just the basic foundation layer of color. The first layer is mostly for the sky; I also added a bit of pink for the sand.

Sunset Oregon Coast acrylic painting lesson I now have a few more layers down for the sky. It will need more blending.

Sunset Oregon Coast acrylic painting lesson I have blended the sky, added a few clouds, and started the water.

Sunset Oregon Coast acrylic painting lesson I have blended the sky a bit more. The rocks now have a basic foundation of color, as does the sand. I have also done a bit more blending of the water.

Sunset Oregon Coast acrylic painting lesson Almost there. The rocks are taking shape, and the sand is just about finished. I have added a reflection in the wet sand. I blended the water in a few places again, and changed the line of the water's edge. The center rock is finished, and has a nice glow on the side facing the sun.

Sunset Oregon Coast acrylic painting lesson Finished. I touched up the water in some places and added more dimension to the rocks. I also finished the seagull on the far left rock.
